Unsafe Microwave Ovens Recalled

5 Dec

Kentucky-based General Electric is withdrawing about 92,000 microwave ovens in the U.S. because they may overheat and ignite, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Wednesday.A company spokesman confirmed the microwave units were not sold in Canada. The recall affects combination microwave and conventional built-in wall ovens sold under the GE, GE Profile and Kenmore brand names. A full list of recalled models and serial numbers is available on the CPSC website. The company has learned of 35 incidents involving minor property damage and one other incident that resulted in fire damage to kitchen cabinets. No injuries were reported to the company. The units were sold in department and appliance stores from January 2000 to December 2003 for between $1,500 and $2,000 US.The CPSC says consumers should stop using the microwave ovens and contact the company for a free repair or rebate. The lower thermal oven in the unit is not affected by the overheating problem.
