More research confirms that salt is a culprit in blood pressure

A new research from the University of Alabama shows that a high salt diet is detrimental to resistant blood pressure. Resistant blood pressure is when medication does not impact the pressure or when a person requires four or more medication to bring their blood pressure under control. Put away the salt shaker people.

Too much salt can contribute to resistant high blood pressure despite taking several medications to control it, University of Alabama researchers report.

High blood pressure is called resistant hypertension when blood pressure remains above goal despite their taking three medications to lower it. High blood pressure that is under control, but requires four or more medications to treat it, is also considered resistant to treatment.

Dr. Eduardo Pimenta, now at the Department of Hypertension and Nephrology at the Dante Pazzanese Institute of Cardiology in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

For the study, Pimenta’s team randomly assigned 13 patients with resistant high blood pressure, to a high-or low-salt diet. These patients were all taking at least three blood pressure medications.

The researchers found that patients on the low-salt diet saw their systolic blood pressure drop by 22.6 mmHg, and their diastolic blood pressure dropped by 9.2 mmHg, compared with people on high-salt diet.

People should try and keep their salt intake to below 2,300 milligrams daily, and  those patients with medically resistant hypertension, a closely monitored low-salt diet 1/81,500 milligrams daily 3/8 should be considered experts agreed.

Cancer Update from John Hopkins

1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard
tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size.

2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person’s lifetime

3. When the person’s immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors.

4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These
could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastro-intestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor destruction.

9 When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications.

10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites.

11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.

CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

a. Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal,Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses but only in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in color. Better alternative is Bragg’s aminos or sea salt.

b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soya milk cancer cells are being starved.

c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef or pork.. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, e specially to people with cancer.

d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains,seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment.About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts)and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at
temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).

e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine.Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties. Water-best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrified and leads to more toxic buildup.

13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body’s killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-ssence,Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the body’s own killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body’s normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.

15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, unforgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life.

! ! ! 16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

Dioxin chemicals causes cancer, especially breast cancer..
Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies.
Don’t freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic. 
 

 Recently, Dr. Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us.. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers.
This especially applies to food s that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body.. Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. 
 

 Paper is n’t bad but you don’t know what is in the paper. It’s just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.

Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the hi gh heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead.

Contaminated Baby Milk in China

About 10,000 or more children in China have been affected by contaminated milk powder  including approximately 1300 who have actually gotten sic and 3 died so far, stated a Chinese Ministry of Health official.

At the cente of the scandal is  Sanlu group partly owned by New Zealand’s   Fonterra Cooperative, the largest dairy producer. 

The New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark said her government contacted Beijing directly, after alerting the company and officials but to no avail. The Chinese officials were very slow to act. Mothers attested that they suspected something was wrong with the milk since March this year.

The government is investigating how the contamination occurred. Official media is reporting that melamine, an industrial chemical rich in nitrogen, was added to the milk powder to help the food appear rich in protein, but it also prompted babies to develop kidney stones.

Reports are now emerging of some mothers expressing doubts about the milk as early as March this year, on seeing that their babies’ urine was discoloured after drinking the milk.

It said the contamination probably happened at the milk-collecting stations.

Meanwhile, state news agency Xinhua reported that two brothers had been arrested, having allegedly added melamine to the 3 tonnes of milk they sold to farmers every day. Melamine was linked to the deaths and illness of thousands of cats and dogs in the United States last year after it was added to pet food components exported from China.

 The moral of this story is as parents or people we should be aware of our bodies and when something new is happening.  We are our best physicians sometimes, we know how we feel.  If something don’t feel right stop using it. Trust your intuition.

Superfoods – Foods that are good for you but mix ‘n’ match

  The term superfoods have been coined to identify foods that are packed with life-giving qualities that are exceptionally nutritious and good for us and the added bonus is that they help to prevent diseases.  These foods include spinach, spirulina and salmon.

Recently avocado has joined the ranks of superfoods in spite of its high fat content. Nutritionists argue that the fat in avocado is the “good” fat that is its monosaturated and does not clog arteries.  Avocado is also high is things like potassium, vit. E and K.

  Any like always, entrepreneurs like to seize of ideas and terms in order to sell foods which they label “superfoods” indiscriminately so you always have to be aware, read labels and know what you are eating.  The less pre-cooked, pre-packaged foods you eat (which are packed with sodium – even those in the so-called “health food stores”) is the best for you. You can then control the amount of sodium and all the other additives that are found in perfectly good food by themselves.

Steven G. Pratt, M.D., author of several books on nutrition, claims that the lowly cinnamon is a superfood as well as chocolate but there must be 70 per cent or more cacao to be considered in this category.  So why not buy plain cacao and make your own hot chocolate using a little sugar, milk and the cocoa powder and blend it in your blender and there you have a delicious, nutritious drink.

   Susan Kraus, dietitian at Hackensack University, NJ stated “eating only these particular foods would be partially beneficial,” says Kraus. “However, we need many nutrients daily to maintain optimal health.”

 

Rather than concentrating only on superfoods, she says to consider these three qualities when devising a meal and snack plan: variety, colour and processing.

Beware of sweet smelling air

As we become so averse to natural human scents and smells largely triggered by advertisements that tell us that these scents are bad and unnatural and we should do our best to cover them up, which they invent for us at a nice little profit for themselves. These products such as  air fresheners are not only polluting the environment, they are polluting our bodies as well and may even be causing some of the cancers we are seeing more of these days.  Many of these air fresheners have toxic compounds that are harmful to health.  Whether they cause cancer or not, why are we so gullible as humans to suck up air from cans the content of which we do not have a clue.

Environmentalists are now saying that the undisclosed compounds should now be disclosed so that we know what we are inhaling.

  Here is a sampling of some of the products that environmentalists are concerned with that have no disclosure: For crying out loud people, stop the drain on our environment, use soap and water, open windows, air out places naturally and let’s keep some of the good life for our forbears.

“We rely on product information (such as labels) and product regulations to reduce potential risks,” says Anne Steinemann of University of Washington in her article says, published online in the Environmental Impact Assessment Review in July.

Sweating may help prevent asthma

The ability to sweat may do more than keep the body cool – it may mean a lower chance of exercise-related asthma, say scientists.

University of Michigan researchers say those who make less sweat, tears and saliva when exercising may have more breathing problems.

It is possible there is also too little fluid in their airways, they suggest.

However, asthma experts say it is too early to say whether the research will lead to practical patient benefits.

   It’s too early for definitive result but our hardworking scientists are always on the look out for connections that may help us lead better lives.

Orthorexia the new food obsession that kills

In my blog I have always stressed that whatever we do, whatever we are into, let it be with moderation.  Moderation is the key to life. Anytime we upset the balance it wreaks havoc in our lives.

Last night while listening to 20/20 show I learnt about this new obsession with food called Orthorexia  this is  the pursuit of purity of food, people who are disgusted by apples, grapes etc. if they are not of the organic variety. They go to such extremes that they may take hours in the supermarket reading every lable or hours to prepare food because it has to be done in a certain way. Many of these addicts are into raw foods and develop an aversion to anything they consider toxic. One woman said she does not go out to eat because they do not trust the ingredients “if it’s not organic, probably what goes into the soil is going go into the food, and then it goes into you.”

 The term orthorexia was coined by  Dr. Steve Bratman, author of the book “Health Food Junkies” to describe obsessive compulsive disorder focused on health food.

  Bratman wrote that while researching for the book he heard a lot of heart wrenching stories from families  with loved ones wasting away in pursitof purity. Ironically, the diet that is supposed to save them eventually kill them or leave them unhealthy, tired and lack of energy.  One woman said she realized that something was wrong when she found herself neglecting her children while she kept track of formulas, nutient ratios, numbers etc.
